Three Bladensburg police officers are on administrative leave following the shooting and death of a Bladensburg woman Friday night, after she allegedly rushed the officers with a knife.

Tonya Michelle Buggs, 43, of the 4200 block of 53rd Avenue was shot around 11:40 p.m., according to a press release from the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Officers from the Bladensburg Police Department responded to a call about a disturbance involving a woman brandishing a knife at Buggs’ apartment. When they knocked on Buggs’ door, she opened it and held her knife above her head, according to the press release.

The police ordered Buggs to drop the weapon and then three of them shot at Buggs when she allegedly lunged at them with her knife.

Buggs was taken to a local hospital, where doctors later pronounced her dead.

The three officers were placed on routine administrative leave while the county police investigate the incident.
