Seven students from the Gaithersburg High School Russian 3 and 4 Honors class won medals in the National Russian Essay contest sponsored by the American Council of Teachers of Russian. Gold-medalist Katelynne Viscayno, silver-medalists Carrie Aposporos and Ryanne Cando, and bronze-medalists Jesse Bronson, Marenda Kyle, Mat Bouldry and Josselyn Marroquin wrote about education in United States and compared it to the Russian educational system, including grading, reporting, subjects, length of the day, exams and electives, teacher Alla Sonsev said.

Sonsev has taught Russian at Gaithersburg High School for 30 years, she wrote in an email.

“I am very proud of my students’ achievements in Russian. GHS has the largest Russian program for the state of Maryland among regular high schools without having Russian in the middle schools,” she wrote.
