A morning power outage shut down a building at Montgomery College in Rockville Monday.

Elizabeth Homan, Montgomery College spokeswoman, said the power went off in two buildings on campus around 6:30 a.m. The power came back on around 7 a.m., but went back off around 9 a.m.

Not knowing how long it would take to get power back on a second time, Homan said college officials decided to close the Mannakee Building, an office building at the corner of Mannakee Street and Hungerford Drive.

“When you’re dealing with power, you never know,” she said.

Although power was restored again shortly before 11:30 a.m., Homan said the Mannakee Building will remain closed for the day.

The South Campus Instruction Building nearby also lost power, but has since reopened. Homan said the power outage caused two or three classes on the lower level of the building to end early, but emergency power and light from windows allowed other classes to continue.

The cause of the power outages was not immediately known.
