The crystal ball has cleared for fortunetellers in Gaithersburg.
The mayor and council voted unanimously Tuesday night to lift the city’s ban on fortunetelling businesses and to allow practitioners to operate in specific city zones.
Montgomery County Law had once prohibited fortunetelling businesses. After a Maryland Court of Appeals ruling struck down the law on the basis of free speech in June 2010, the county reversed its ban. Gaithersburg’s city code had its own form of the ban, the Gazette previously reported.
The months-long process to change that code to allow soothsayers to open shop in the city started last summer, when a few anonymous callers asked about starting fortunetelling businesses, according to City Manager Tony Tomasello.
One application to open a fortunetelling business in Gaithersburg was filed on Jan. 19, City Attorney Lynn Board said.
