Maryland State Police have identified the driver in a fatal accident that tied up the Tuesday morning commute.

Maria Cristina Durandal of Frederick died in single-vehicle crash about 5:15 a.m. on southbound Interstate 270, according to a press release from Maryland State Police. Durandal was driving her hatchback-style Scion when she lost control of the vehicle. The car hit the concrete barrier that separated the northbound and southbound lanes.

Durandal, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release. No other vehicles were involved and there were no passengers in Durandal’s car.

The accident closed the southbound lanes of the road at Shady Grove Road for several hours, but all lanes were reopened.

Gaithersburg Police also reported a crash on westbound Interstate 370 at about 6:58 a.m.

Police spokesman Dan Lane said a Mercedes flipped over along the roadway for unknown reasons. The crash, just before northbound I-270, is under investigation, he said. The driver, a 23-year-old Gaithersburg man, was transported to Shady Grove Hospital where he was treated and released, according to Lane.

An investigation is continuing.
