Montgomery County police are investigating an armed robbery at a Gaithersburg restaurant Thursday evening.

Shortly after 8 p.m., police responded to a call about a robbery at El Meson restaurant at 615 S. Frederick Ave. in Gaithersburg. Witnesses said two men opened the front door of the restaurant and discharged a fire extinguisher inside the restaurant, according to a news release from the Montgomery County Police Department. Police have released video of the robbery.

Because of the fire extinguisher, police are investigating the incident as an armed robbery, said police Captain Paul Starks.

“They threatened the employees with and used the fire extinguisher,” Starks said.

One man entered the restaurant, concealing his face with an unknown article of clothing or cloth, and grabbed the cash register, police said. Both men fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to the release. No one was injured.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the robbery to call police at 240-773-5100 or 301-279-8000. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County at 866-411-8477.
