Montgomery County Police detectives have arrested a man in the attack and robbery of an elderly woman as she left a Safeway grocery store on Outlet Drive in the Briggs Chaney area Tuesday.

Police have charged Ricky Antonio Jefferson, 45, of the 14100 block of Castle Boulevard in Silver Spring, with robbery, second-degree assault and theft under $100, a statement from police said.

The incident took place around 9:40 p.m., according to Angela Cruz, a spokeswoman for Montgomery County Police.

The man approached the woman from behind, threw her to the ground and robbed her, according to police. Cruz said the man then fled area on foot.

The woman, who police did not name, sustained minor injuries in the assault and was treated on the scene by Fire and Rescue personnel, she said.

A store surveillance camera captured the robbery on video, a statement from police said, and officers canvassed the area around the store asking people if they recognized the suspect involved.

At about 5:30 p.m. Friday, plain clothes officers conducting surveillance of the area saw Jefferson walk down Castle Boulevard and enter an apartment building, the statement said. At about 9:30 p.m., he left the apartment and began walking toward the shopping center with the Safeway, and officers arrested him without incident, according to police.
