Roosevelt's wrestlers sprint to catch up -- Gazette.Net

At the conclusion of Wednesday night's wrestling tri-meet at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, the Raiders moved nearly as quickly after practice as they did while executing takedowns and reversals on the mat.

That's because if they returned all the equipment to its proper place in 25 minutes or less, coach Mike McRae would give them off from practice on Sunday.

It's a pace the Raiders likely will need to maintain throughout the season as, by McRae's own admission, Roosevelt will be chasing Parkdale in pursuit of the Prince George's County championship this year.

“I still think we're dominant, but we're just not getting that extra edge we're always having,” said McRae, whose Raiders lost four key contributors from last season's team. “[Coach Adam Forschner has] done a good job over there at Parkdale.”

The Raiders, however, are no slouches as the team improved to 6-1 with a pair of victories against Oxon Hill and Laurel in their home gym. In the third match of the evening, Oxon Hill beat Laurel, 54-24, while Roosevelt outscored its opponents by a combined 134-15.

One of the premiere matches of the night was the 170-pound bout between Roosevelt's Jonathan Jones and Oxon Hill's Darrian Hollings. Jones bested Hollings at the Northern Tournament earlier this season, but Hollings — coming off a nasty stomach virus — downed Jones, 5-1.

“I was feeling a little weak,” said Jones, who bumped up a weight class to face Hollings. “I just didn't wrestle my best. I'm not doubting my technique is better than his, I've just got to get in better shape.”

In addition to the experienced Jones, Roosevelt is bolstered by some veteran lightweights in Levi Gayatao and Jon Inda, as well as first-year wrestler Casey Wokocha at 195.

“He's a first-year kid, but you would not know that looking at him,” McRae said. “He's a beast. He's the kind of kid who you show a move one time and he's got it. He's extremely athletic and smart.”

Oxon Hill's evening began with a win against Laurel during which none of their wrestlers lost before a humbling result against the Raiders. Still, Clippers coach Sean Edelin was pleased with his squad's effort considering they've been unable to practice since last Thursday because of a science fair at John Hanson — their temporary gym while the school is remodeled.

“Laurel's a young team. I've got a lot of young guys, too, but I think we're a little bit further ahead in our technique,” Edelin said.

Edelin was particularly pleased with the efforts of Hollings and 182-pounder Kyrahn Perez, who won both of his matches.

For Laurel, a rebuilding season holds some promise as a number of first-year wrestlers push through the ups and downs of a trying season. One of the more exciting matches of the entire meet came at the 152-pound weight class where Roosevelt's Sam Brogi scored two back points in the final seconds of the third period to tie Laurel's Anthony Keyes at 9-9. The match ended when Brogi took down Keyes in the first overtime period.

“They're looking good for a bunch of first-year wrestlers. Each time they go out there, they're getting better and better. That's what we're looking for is progress,” Laurel coach Irwin Poelinitz said.
