Damascus High School's wrestling team remained undefeated Saturday, improving its record to 9-0 with a 41-21 victory over Thomas S. Wootton and a 72-3 triumph over host James H. Blake in Silver Spring.
The day began with the marquee match between the Swarmin' Hornets and the Patriots (8-2), who lost their first match of the season on Wednesday at Bethesda Chevy-Chase on tie-breaking criteria.
It was a rematch from last year's 4A/3A West Regional Duals. Wootton edged out Damascus by just a few points in the semifinal round.
“It burned a little bit from last year when [Wootton] beat us at the regional duals by two points or so,” Damascus coach Jon Furgeson said. “We wanted to show that we could beat those guys.”
Damascus got off to a hot start on Saturday in the 106-pound match. David Creegan scored his first four points with a standing spladle on Wootton's Jack Cohen in the first period. Creegan would go on to pin Cohen with just under 30 seconds left in the second period.
The Hornets did not let up from there, winning the first six matches and jumping out to a 26-0 lead.
One of the more exciting bouts of the match happened at 120 pounds between Michael Wilkerson of Damascus and Austin Tritto of Wootton.
Tritto led most of the match by a slim 1-0 score, but Wilkerson was able to tie it up in the third with an escape before earning a takedown as time expired to come away with the 3-1 victory.
Damascus' six-match winning streak began with a pin at 106 and ended with another at 138 pounds, as Owen Brooks pinned Will Quackenbush late in the third period after turning him several times throughout the match.
Wootton was finally able to get on the board in the 145-pound bout as Garrett Ruderman earned a 5-2 decision over Jack Creegan.
But the Hornets' Johnny Fischer halted Wootton's momentum by recording a first-period pin at 152 over Josh Hollman.
This was followed by two thrillers at 160 and 170, resulting in each team coming away with a decision.
At 160, Damascus' Logan Brooks overcame a 3-2 deficit going into the third period to beat Wootton's Jay Carroll, 4-3.
At 170, Wootton's Stephen Potemken grappled with Caleb Baisden and used a shrug to get a takedown with seven seconds left in the third period to win, 3-2.
“Potemken had a real tough matchup,” Wootton head coach Kevin O'Neill said. “His guy dropped down a weight class to come see him and he was able to pull that out.”
Wootton would go on to win three of the four remaining matches, including two pins by Chen Han at 182 and Ralph Bernardo at 220, as well as an overtime victory for heavyweight Josh Strauss.
“Obviously that's a tough loss,” O'Neill said. “But I am somewhat encouraged by the fact that we had some close matches against a lot of their tough kids. And I'm encouraged by that because if we see them again and pull out those close matches then that's a big swing in points. … I'm encouraged and I do think we can beat them if we see them again.”
The next time these two teams could potentially meet would be in the regional duals at the end of the season and Furgeson knows that's when it really matters.
“Last year we did the same thing,” Furgeson said, “We beat them in some tournaments and then lost to them when it mattered. We're trying to stay focused and ready to go and the kids wrestled awesome today. We're going to go back to the room, keep working hard, and see if we can get better. …
“We have some great senior leadership at the top of our weight divisions and some great young kids who have been wrestling forever. They know what it's like to win. They've been winning since they were 6 or 7.”
Wootton got redemption against Blake (1-9) with a 62-12 victory. It won 11 of the 14 matches, including four by forfeit.
