Members of Thomas G, Pullen K-8 Creative and Performing Arts School’s middle school symphonic band showed off their musical talents in December when they performed at the White House.

The band performed a variety of holiday-themed songs for two hours on Dec. 10 in the White House’s east room.

School band director Paul Hatton said a parent who volunteers at the White House submitted a recording of the band for consideration, and the band was eventually selected in November. Hatton said his students showed a remarkable amount of motivation to prepare for the performance.

“As a middle school band, we typically prepare 20 minutes of music and it takes half a year,” Hatton said. “We had to meet three times a week after school in addition to our during-class rehearsals, and I had to push them really hard. I think the kids thought it was something serious to work toward.”

Hatton said the students performed while visitors took tours through the White House and after the performance was over, they took a tour themselves.

“It was surreal,” he said. “The students were ecstatic and elated to be there.”
