Health Partners in Waldorf has received funding to spruce up its building.

In November, the nonprofit was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Philip L. Graham Fund to help purchase transportable dental equipment and add new carpet and flooring throughout the building. Money from the grant also was used to build shelves and help organize the group’s clothing donation room, which board President Kermit “Kit” Wright said previously had been disorganized at best.

Health Partners also received a $12,500 grant from the Francis P. Chiaramonte Private Foundation to improve the building’s exterior.

On Tuesday morning, a new sign was being added to the front of the building, which also had recently been painted to match the colors of the neighboring Waldorf Jaycees center.

“It really has changed the whole ambiance of the building,” Wright said of renovations made to the interior. “It’s easier to clean, and it looks better.”

Health Partners Executive Director Chrisie Mulcahey said the group is pleased to have received the money, even if the changes might seem insignificant at face value.

“We were so excited because the change that something even as small as new carpet makes puts us a step above of what people’s expectations of a free clinic are,” Mulcahey said. “For me, it’s amazing. The more we can make people who need our services feel at home here is what it’s about. It’s another opportunity to provide those who need our services with the same level of care.”

Health Partners also received a $75,000 grant from the Chiaramonte Foundation last year.

Mulcahey said the floor in the building has not been entirely replaced yet. The sign on the front of the building is expected to be finished today.

The Chiaramonte Foundation is named for the doctor who founded Southern Maryland Hospital Center in 1977. The Philip L. Graham Fund is named for the former publisher of The Washington Post and president of The Washington Post Co.
