Irma Louise Susott Rothert, 91, of California died Dec. 31, 2012, at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown.
Born July 6, 1921, in Elberfeld, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Louis and Emma Susott.
She graduated from Elberfeld High School in 1939 and then attended Lockyear Business School in Evansville, Ind.
Her first job was at the Indiana Farm Bureau in Evansville. During World War II, she lived in Elberfeld with her mother and worked in the office of Republic Aviation, wartime maker of the P-47 Thunderbolt and LSTs. In 1944 at the Zion United Church of Christ in Elberfeld, she married Ralph F. Rothert of Holland, Ind. After the war, she moved to Holland and worked at the Holland Dairy for a short time before she and her husband moved to Fort Wayne, Ind. There she worked for General Electric Co. She was one of the few people trained to use the comptometer there. From the mid-1960s until her retirement, she worked at DeJong’s ladies’ wear store in Evansville.
She and her husband were married for 51 years. They loved camping in their travel trailer and visited many of the national parks in the United States. On their camping trips, they often took excursions, like hiking down into the Grand Canyon or whitewater rafting on the Snake River. They also enjoyed touring internationally with a group from University of Evansville, visiting Europe, Asia and Israel.
When they weren’t on the road, they loved square dancing and were members of Stomp and Stumble and Stardusters. After her husband’s death in 1995, she continued to travel with her children and friends as much as possible. In January 2007, she moved to California to live with her daughter, Lonna.
She was an avid seamstress. Making clothes for herself, her children and grandchildren was her joy. She also enjoyed sharing new adventures with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her three children, Lonna Siskind (Harold) of California, Jane Rothert of Urbana, Ill., and Jeffrey (Jo) of Washington, Ind.; four grandchildren, Jana McGuin (Christopher) of Gaithersburg, Bradly Siskind of Elkridge, Heidi Rothert of Salt Lake City and Kevin Rothert of Provo, Utah; and two great-grandsons, Lucas Siskind and Baby McGuin (due Jan. 23), both of Maryland.
Services will be held Jan. 5 at 1 p.m. at Alexander Funeral Home, East Chapel, in Evansville, with interment to take place at Susott Cemetery in Elberfeld. Friends may visit Jan. 5 from 11 a.m. until time of service time at the funeral home.
