The Stephen Decatur Middle School AVID program has been collecting donations of new and slightly used books for students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade for area elementary schools since Oct. 30.

AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness and preparedness program for students in grades four through 12.

ďAt Stephen Decatur Middle School, our students have made a pledge to reach as many students as we can through literacy and commitment to service,Ē said Ruby Thornton, Stephen Decaturís AVID coordinator in a statement.

Feeder schools receiving donated books include Clinton Grove Elementary School in Temple Hills, James Ryder Elementary School in Clinton, Waldon Woods Elementary School in Clinton, Francis T. Evans Elementary School in Camp Springs and Melwood Elementary School in Rosaryville.

Donations can be sent to Stephen Decatur Middle School AVID Program c/o Ruby Thornton, AVID Coordinator, 8200 Pinewood Drive, Clinton, MD 20735.
