Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett is encouraging residents to attend upcoming operating budget forums to discuss priorities for the next budget year given the budget shortfalls predicted in upcoming years. Fiscal year 2014 begins on July 1.
Council Staff Director Stephen Farber said in December the projected budget gap for the next budget year is about $136 million.
Leggett will announce his recommended operating budget March 15 and the County Council is scheduled to approve the budget at the end of May.
Separate forums will also be held for the budget for Montgomery County Public Schools, which is largely funded by county government.
Superintendent Joshua P. Starr released in December a recommended $2.22 billion operating budget for next budget year, an increase of $48.95 million over this budget year.
The first time the public can weigh in is at two separate forums at 7 p.m. Jan. 10.
