A Bowie man is charged with first- and second-degree assault after he dragged a pregnant woman alongside his vehicle while driving in Bladensburg, according to Prince George's County sheriff's deputies.
Ignacio Gomez, 49, of the 6200 block of Crain Highway, was arrested at his home Monday and was admitted to the county's department of corrections, though he has since been released on bond, according to online county court records.
County sheriff's deputies said they were investigating a warrant for Gomez' arrest obtained by the Bladensburg Police Department.
The warrant states that Gomez used his vehicle to assault a five-month pregnant woman at an apartment complex in the 4200 block of 58th Avenue on Dec. 19, according to the sheriff's office, noting that the woman sustained multiple injuries.
Sgt. Tracy Stone of the Bladensburg Police Department said although the 22-year-old woman was pulled a short distance during a dispute and sustained cuts and bruises, she was not hospitalized.
“She was trying to get into the vehicle and he drove off and she got hung up with the handle and she was dragged a little bit,” said Stone, noting that Gomez was driving a minivan.
Gomez and the victim are known to each other, Stone said, though he said they are not related or in a relationship.
Sheriff's deputies said Gomez was taken into custody without incident.
Court records show that Gomez has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Jan. 24.
A defense attorney for Gomez was not listed with the courts by Thursday, according to online court records.
