While most of Friday's consolatikon game at the CKA/Paint Branch Invitational tournament between Urbana High School and Bethesda-Chevy Chase was closely played, the Hawks dominated the second quarter, leading them to a 54-44 win on Friday.
The Hawks outscored B-CC 14-5 in the second frame.
“It's a good way to end the tournament and head into the new year so we're happy to get the win,” Urbana coach Jessica Mills said.
In a game filled with turnovers, the Hawks played cleanest in the second quarter. They turned the ball over just three times while taking the ball away seven times.
Claudia Lohr and Peyton Carper each scored four points in the period to lead the Hawks. Mariama Tunkara scored all five of the Barons' points.
“In the second quarter, it's been a little rough,” said Sammie Abernethy, who finished with nine points. “We're struggling a little bit. We haven't had much practice with all the snow, so we're kind of out of it right now. But we pulled away with this win so it was good for our team.”
B-CC used a full court press the majority of the game, but it never had the desired effect.
Hawks guards Lohr, Carper and Anna Cholewczynski weaved through the pressure, which helped the team to some quick baskets on the offensive end. The Barons never got closer than seven points in the second half.
“We have some really talented guards on our team,” Abernethy said. “It's going to help us a lot because we need more diversity that have different talents than teams in our conference. It's going to help us a lot through all the challenges we're going to face.”
