William Howard Krell, 82, of North Beach died Dec. 25, 2012, at the BurnettCalvert Hospice House in Prince Frederick.
He was born May 11, 1930, in Tamaqua, Pa., to Howard William and Anna (Morgan) Krell.
He attended local schools and graduated from Tamaqua High School in 1948. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 15, 1948, and married Joan Tennant in Tamaqua on Nov. 20, 1948. Upon his discharge from the Army, he attended Ohio State and Case Western Reserve universities, both in Ohio. After college, he became a fundraiser for Lutheran Laymanís Movement, working throughout the United States. He later joined the staff of Upper New York Synod in Syracuse, N.Y., the Community Chest of Greater Cincinnati and United Way of Quad Cities in Rock Island, Ill., before retiring to Kinston, N.C. He then became the director of the United Way in Kinston and directed flood relief efforts in Kinston after hurricanes and tornadoes devastated the town. He retired and moved to North Beach in 2005.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jean Krell.
He is survived by his wife, Joan R. Krell; daughter, Linda Ann Krell of North Beach; sons, William H. Krell Jr. and his wife, Jeanne, and Glenn D. Krell and his wife, Karen, all of Virginia Beach, Va.; grandchildren, Scott, David, Michael, Jason, Ryan, Rachel and Brian Krell; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Arnold Krell and his wife, LaMae, of White Marsh; and sister, Carolyn F. Tanner of Arlington, Va.
Family will receive friends from 1 until a service celebrating his life is offered at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at St. Nicholas Lutheran Church, 1450 Plum Point Road in Huntingtown.
Interment will be at Sky-View Memorial Park in Tamaqua, Pa.
