Sodexo Inc. has signed on to 10 more years in its Gaithersburg location, officials of the food and facilities management company announced Tuesday.

The company’s building at One Washingtonian Center acts as its North American headquarters and employs more than 500, a release from the company stated. Sodexo plans to add 50 new jobs over the next three years.

The decision to consider other locations for Sodexo was “part of our strategy to look at the best opportunities” for the company’s stakeholders, Sodexo spokesman Enrico Dinges said.

Montgomery County Economic Development Director Steven A. Silverman said Sodexo, like most companies, sought the best offer on commercial space that it could find.

“There’s an unprecedented amount of vacant office space in the Washington region and every company is looking at the region now, not just the county that they’re in,” Silverman said.

Local and state governments each contributed funds or loans to Sodexo to help them renew their lease, according to the release.

The city of Gaithersburg approved funding of up to $500,000 to help Sodexo with expenses associated with renewing the lease, while Montgomery County approved up to $1.5 million.

The state of Maryland approved a $2 million loan through its Economic Development Assistance Fund.

Sodexo is a “pretty significant contributor to the city’s economy,” Gaithersburg Economic Development Director Tom Lonergan said. Silverman said the company’s employees help the area by patronizing shops and restaurants, especially in the Washingtonian Center.

Sodexo has been in Gaithersburg since 1998, the release said.

While the details of the city’s funding are still being worked out, Lonergan said the city government is “thrilled” that Sodexo will be able to stay in Gaithersburg.
