After witnessing his team roll through division opponents Quince Orchard and Gaithersburg in a tri-meet on Saturday, Northwest High School wrestling coach Joe Vukovich knew one thing for certain — his team is not ready.
"It's still early in the season, but technically we are still making a lot of mistakes and that is a concern," Vukovich said. "I don't think we are in strong enough shape yet. ... We started our division schedule today and it was nice to get those two wins, but we need to get better technically and get in better shape."
The Jaguars defeated the Cougars 48-9 and shut out the Trojans 81-0. Quince Orchard defeated Gaithersburg 60-12 in the opening match.
Northwest was led by strong performances by Luis Beteta, Ainsley Garvey, Dell Ngonga, Tommy Beard, Jeff Moreno, Keegan Johnson and Nick Davis. Davis (120 pounds) and Ngonga (106) pinned both of their opponents while Garvey (145), Beard (138) and Moreno (152) each earned a decision and a fall apiece.
"We can't feel satisfied with these wins," Garvey said. "We need to keep practicing hard and stay focused on getting better."
Johnson (170) recorded a fall in his first match and a technical fall in his second. Beteta, usually the Jaguars 220-pound representative, wrestled up a weight class against Derek Compton of Quince Orchard and earned a 7-0 decision. The senior returned to his usual class against Gaithersburg and recorded a swift fall against Joey Kaisler in 1 minute, 27 seconds.
Vukovich pointed to Northwest's three losses in the meet against the Cougars to illustrate his point about his team not being where he wants them to be with their conditioning. Quince Orchard earned all three wins in the closing seconds of each match: Nelson Reyes was awarded three points for back control late in his 195-pound match against T.J. Patterson to earn a 9-6 decision, Matt Fuster registered a takedown in the tiebreaker to eke out a 5-3 decision over Ryan Gibson at 220 pounds and Kyle Bollinger escaped with seven seconds remaining for a 1-0 decision over Ben Whitacre at 126 pounds.
"We lost three matches at the last second," Vukovich said. "That's shape, and that's what I'm talking about. That's upsetting. That's all I can say about that."
The Jaguars easily defeated the Trojans in the final meet of the afternoon, recording 13 falls in the process. Quince Orchard also quickly dispatched Gaithersburg, tallying nine falls.
