Prince George’s County police identified the victim in a fatal shooting Wednesday at a Lanham rental home as Kevin James, 39, of the 10100 block of Old Franklin Ave.
James suffered from a gunshot wound when he was discovered by police around 3 p.m. Wednesday on Old Franklin Avenue, a small residential street with about six homes. Officers took James to an area hospital, where he later died, police said.
Evidence suggests that James was targeted and the shooting was not random, said Cpl. Larry Johnson, a county police spokesman. The investigation is “still in its preliminary stages,” he said.
Family members of James could not be reached for comment on Saturday.
The neighborhood is typically quiet, neighbors said.
“It’s a dead end road so we don’t get much traffic at all,” said Pam Heimann, 50, who said she did not hear shots or see any suspicious activity. “There were a lot of vehicles and trucks and everything, so it was pretty surprising.”
Linda Harrison, 60, who lives on Lawton Court, said her backyard borders the yard of the home where the shooting took place.
“I didn’t see no more than what police were seeing after it happened,” Harrison said. “We talked to police, and an officer asked me if we had heard any shooting or anything and we hadn’t. I had no idea who [the victim] was. It’s usually a very quiet area.”
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Prince George’s County police Homicide Unit at 301-772-4925.
