Brookeville resident Karl McDonald celebrated his eighth birthday with a party on Dec. 2, and in lieu of presents, he asked that his friends bring an unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots.

His mom, Cate McDonald, said that seeing all the images from Hurricane Sandy and all the people who lost their homes made Karl wonder about how they would celebrate Christmas if they did not have a house.

“We talked more about the plight of people less fortunate than us, and talked about either collecting food or toys instead of present from his party,” she said.

Ten boys attended the party, and as requested by Karl, they each brought toys and other items for the donation box.

“Karl had some second thoughts when he saw the gifts, but is still determined that they will go to a kid that needs some new toys,” said Cate.

The toys will be donated to Toys for Tots.
