In August, we lost Officer Adrian Morris due to a vehicular accident during a pursuit, when he was ejected from his police cruiser. He was not wearing his seatbelt.
Two months later, we lost Officer Kevin Bowden when he was ejected from his police cruiser during a vehicular accident. He was not wearing his seatbelt either.
These deaths are tragic; the real tragedy is that they were probably preventable.
Iím sure that the standard operating procedures of the Prince Georgeís County Police Department require that the officers buckle up.
Itís time for the department to start policing its own by imposing penalties or fines on the officers that donít follow the rules.
The police department and the officersí families are not the only ones affected by these deaths. The citizens feel the loss and pain, too.
