St. Marks United Methodist Church will be holding a scholarship fundraiser concert in honor of former member Catherine Hopkins, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 105.
"The Katie Hopkins Scholarship Fund Concert and Toys for Tots Drive" will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at the church, located at 601 Eighth St. in Laurel.
The event is also a toy drive for Toys for Tots. Attendees are asked to bring a new, unopened toy for the drive and to make an offering of any amount to the scholarship fund, said Jacqueline Jones, minister for Christian education and children's church.
The concert will feature the church's choir, Jones said.
Until she passed away June 21, Hopkins was the church's oldest living member, and served as choir director for 46 years, Jones said.
Even when she was no longer able to attend the church due to her health, she still asked about the church community and any new members, Jones said.
Jones said the idea of the scholarship fund began during last year's Senior Day at the church.
"We started the scholarship fund because music was near and dear to her heart,” Jones said. “What better way to honor her than through something she loved so much?"
