The Damascus High School varsity cheerleaders won first place in the Montgomery County Division I Cheerleading Competition on Nov. 17, which took place at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring.

Despite not placing in the top three their first year competing in Division 1 last year, the Damascus Hornets took the top place this year followed by Churchill High School in second and Gaithersburg High School in third. The team had won the 2010 Division II competition.

Clarksburg, Northwest, Quince Orchard, Sherwood and Wootton high schools also participated in the Division I competition.

Coaches Lindsay Durkin and Bobbi Thompson, as well as senior squad captains Amanda O’Brien, Julia Kepley and Vanessa Barnes, led the 30 cheerleaders to their division victory.
