Mount Airy Cub Scout Pack 1191 and New Market Pack 1628 collected more than 3,000 pounds of food for needy families in the area as part of their annual Scouting for Food drive.

The Mount Airy pack collected 1,475 pounds, while New Market collected 1,557 pounds of food.

Scouting for Food is a food collection organized by the National Capital Area council Boys Scouts of America. Itís the scoutsí community steward project aimed at addressing the problem of hunger in their community.

As part of the local effort, members of the packs distributed special bags Nov. 3 to homes in the town for residents to fill with donated goods.

On Nov. 10 the scouts collected the bags and donated the food to Mount Airy NET, a cooperative network of churches and civic organizations that provide support and services for those in need.

Last year the Mount Airy pack collected 2,007 pounds of food and New Market collected 1,656.
