Feed The Family, a Bowie-based charity organization, held a fundraiser Nov. 8 to help feed needy families in the metropolitan area.

More than $10,000 in donations were raised during a red carpet gala held at the Capital Cadillac in Greenbelt, said Darryl Barnes, founding president of Men Aiming Higher, which organized the event. This year marks the second time the Mitchellville-based organization has hosted Feed The Families for the Holiday fundraising drive. Men Aiming Higher is looking to raise $60,000 for the charity, Barnes said.

The program has grown since 2011, Barnes said. Last year’s effort gave out about 250 turkeys around Thanksgiving to families in the Suitland area. This year’s drive will distribute around 650 turkeys at three sites in the county, Upper Marlboro, Suitland and Hyattsvile on Saturday.

Those receiving the turkey as well as other supplies such as clothes had to apply to the organization and demonstrate need, Barnes said.

“We want to expand it and help as many people as we can,” Barnes said.
