Walter Harris Hershey, 88, formerly of Gaithersburg, died Oct. 29, 2012, at Shady Grove Hospital of congenital heart failure.

Born June 7, 1924, in Comus to the late David and Leila Hershey, he was predeceased by Elva May Hershey, his wife of 62 years.

He attended Gaithersburg High School and served in the army from 1941 to 1943. He retired from the federal government after 32 years, and was a life member with the Gaithersburg-Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Department for more than 60 years.

He also freelanced part-time as a photographer for area publications, including The Gazette and The Frederick News-Post. He and his wife had retired to Florida, living less than 20 years in the Daytona Beach and Fort Myers areas.

He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Hershey of Gaithersburg.

A memorial service will take place at noon Dec. 8 at Epworth Memorial Church, 9008 Rosemont Ave., Gaithersburg.
