As the holiday shopping season begins, Silk & Burlap in downtown Frederick is inviting customers to help raise money to feed the county’s elderly.
The vintage home and modern clothing shop at 28 E. Patrick St. is hosting a holiday party Nov. 9 to help raise money for Friends of Meals on Wheels — a nonprofit organization founded in 2009 to raise money and advocate on behalf of the county’s Meals on Wheels program.
Meals on Wheels delivers hot and cold meals to homebound seniors. The elderly must be homebound because of illness or physical limitations, have no caregiver to assist with shopping and be unable to safely prepare food. The program is run by the Frederick County Department of Aging.
The holiday party at Silk & Burlap is from 6 to 9 p.m. Everything in the store will be 10 percent off, and the store will give 10 percent of everything sold to Friends of Meals on Wheels. Food, drink and raffle prizes will be provided.
Gail Wingate, Friends of Meals on Wheels president, said she asked Silk & Burlap to host a fundraiser because of its commitment to women’s issues.
“Women are typically the caregivers of the elderly,” Wingate said. “And, [Silk & Burlap] likes to help organizations locally.”
Wingate said that the money raised that evening will be helpful to the program.
“We’re like the public relations and the fundraising for Meals on Wheels,” she said. “They’re a government agency that can’t go out and raise money.”
The goal of the organization is to expand and improve Meals on Wheels, as the county’s elderly population increases.
