A week after Election Day, the District 2 seat on the Montgomery County Board of Education remains in doubt.
Rebecca Smondrowski of Gaithersburg leads Fred Evans of Rockville by 8,168 votes. The county received more than 34,000 absentee and more than 13,000 provisional ballots, according to the county’s Board of Elections. Provisional ballots will be counted on Wednesday and the last round of absentee ballots will be counted Friday.
Incumbents Christopher Barclay (Dist. 4) of Takoma Park and Philip Kauffman (At-large) of Olney kept their seats on the board in the two other races.
Barclay faced Annita Seckinger of Silver Spring. Barclay won with 58.68 percent of the votes.
Kauffman faced Morris Panner of Chevy Chase. With all precincts reporting, Kauffman won with 73.44 percent of the votes.
Smondrowski received 151,481 votes and Evans collected 143,313 votes, according to the elections board.
Nonpartisan board members, who serve staggered four-year terms, are responsible for overseeing 149,000 students in Montgomery County Public Schools and a more than $2 billion school system budget.
Voters were able to vote for someone for all three open seats, regardless of district.
