With 2,500 more students filing into Montgomery County schools each year, Superintendent Joshua P. Starr wants to make sure school buildings are ready.

Starr requested minor adjustments to the school system’s 2013-2018 Capital Improvements Program on Wednesday, adding in $14.2 million to the approved $1.35 billion approved plan, according to a school system press release.

Of the funds, $11.5 million will go to upgrades for heating and air conditioning replacements; $2.5 million will go to building parts such as fire alarms, public address systems, water and sewer systems, floors, ceilings, windows and doors; and $220,000 will go to planning for school additions.

Despite the extra funds for the HVAC systems, the school system will still have a backlog for this need; the school system would have to spend $28 million per year for the next ten years to catch up, the press release stated.

Starr also recommended two capacity studies, one for the downcounty consortium and the other for combining New Hampshire Estates and Oak View elementary schools. He also recommended a boundary study in the Clarksburg area to determine the need for a new elementary school.

His amendments do not change the current parts of the plan that call for planning and construction funds for six new elementary school addition projects, a middle school addition, and funding for a new elementary and middle school.

The school board will review the superintendent’s request at a work session on Nov. 8, and there will be two public hearings, on Nov. 12 and Nov. 15, both at 7 p.m. at the Carver Educational Services Center at 850 Hungerford Drive in Rockville.
