The bicyclist who was struck by a county school bus in Darnestown on Wednesday afternoon has been identified as 54-year-old Michael Wilhelm Breithaupt.
Breithaupt of the 3700 block of East-West Highway in Chevy Chase remains in serious condition at a local hospital, according to police.
Experts from the Montgomery County police’s Collision Reconstruction Unit arrived at the intersection of Darnestown and Berryville roads at about 4 p.m. Wednesday where the bicyclist was struck a short time earlier, said Officer Britta Thomas, a county police spokeswoman.
Investigators say Breithaupt was travelling northbound on Berryville Road and the school bus was heading eastbound on Darnestown Road at the time of the accident.
Details including what led to the collision or if either party was at fault remained unknown Friday, police said.
“We are doing some examinations of the school bus’ internal system as part of the ongoing investigation to see if anything there may have led to the collision,” said Lt. Robert McCullough, the deputy commander of the department’s Traffic Division.
Dana Tofig, a spokesman for Montgomery County Public Schools, confirmed that the bus was transporting several county high school students from Poolesville High School at the time of the collision.
Thomas confirmed that none of the 29 students on the bus were injured.
Traffic was closed in both directions on Darnestown Road between Berryville Road and Md. 118 until about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, McCullough said.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620, callers may remain anonymous.
