A 4-year-old boy was seriously injured after falling nearly 80 feet from an apartment window in the Piney Branch neighborhood Thursday afternoon.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene shortly after 3:18 p.m. in the 8860 block of Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring, said Assistant Chief Scott Graham, a Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman.

The boy was rushed to Children’s Hospital for head trauma, abrasions and fractures to the leg, said Beth Anne Nesselt, a Fire and Rescue spokeswoman.

Montgomery County police arrived simultaneously with medical personnel to investigate the circumstances of the child’s fall, said Capt. Paul Starks, a police department spokesman.

“We’re just there to check the circumstances of the scene, to find out if there was anything nefarious or if foul play was involved at all,” Starks said. “We’re bound to check it out fully.”

Investigators were still at the scene at 5 p.m. Thursday, said Officer Britta Thomas, a county police spokeswoman.
