A woman was briefly trapped and traffic was significantly delayed on Randolph Road in Wheaton Monday after a traffic accident downed a telephone pole, bringing wires into the road.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., a white box-style truck suddenly left the roadway and struck a tree in the westbound lane of Randolph Road near the intersection with Connecticut Avenue. The impact caused the tree and a nearby telephone utility pole to come down into the roadway on top of a Honda sport utility vehicle, trapping the female driver underneath and requiring emergency rescue workers to extricate her, said Angela Cruz, a Montgomery County police spokeswoman

"Also some phone lines came down into the roadway," Cruz said. "Obviously the box truck was damaged, along with the other vehicle involved."

No serious injuries were reported at the scene, said Beth Anne Nesselt, a Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman. The driver of the truck was not hospitalized, she added.

"Our services were not actually needed, that female driver was uninjured, I believe she was treated at the scene and released," Nesselt said. "We were only on scene for about 15 minutes."

Traffic was closed around the intersection at Connecticut Avenue and Dalewood Drive for about one and a half hours while Pepco and State Highway Administration crews cleared the downed pole and wires, Cruz said.

Police and work crews cleared the scene by 1:05 p.m., Cruz said.

It remains unclear what caused the driver of the box truck to leave the roadway and strike the tree, but police cleared the scene without charging anyone with the crash or issuing any citations, Cruz said.
