Montgomery County Police charged a D.C. man Sunday for the alleged attempted kidnapping of a 13-year-old at a Silver Spring McDonald’s.
Rodney Murrell, 31, of Washington, D.C., was identified by Metropolitan Police Sunday as the man fitting the description released by police. He was being treated at a medical facility in D.C. Police charged Murrell with attempted kidnapping and second-degree assault.
Officers responded to the McDonald's at 8407 Colesville Road in Silver Spring, at approximately 1:30 p.m. Friday and learned a 13-year-old male had been waiting at the counter when Murrell entered the restaurant, grabbed the teen from behind and attempted to drag him outside, according to a police report.
Police say Murrell identified himself as a police officer and told the 13-year-old that he was under arrest. A security guard at the restaurant intervened, and Murrell left the McDonald's.
After Montgomery County Police released his description, D.C. officers matched it with Murrell, who was being treated at a medical facility in the District. Detectives went to the hospital and met with Murrell to interview him about what happened, eventually deciding to charge him.
Police said the extradition process will begin when Murrell is cleared medically.
