The Laurel Police Department announced that Maj. Robert Keith Mapp of Laurel’s police department will retire on Oct. 1.

Mapp has been with Laurel’s police department for 20 years and was appointed to the rank of major in January 2011.

“Throughout Major Mapp’s service, he worked in every department function, making it a better department for those who are following him,” Laurel Police Chief Richard P. McLaughlin said in a statement.

As a result of Mapp’s retirement, James Brooks has been promoted to deputy chief of police; Steve Ivory has been promoted to the rank of police sergeant and Amy Burkett has been promoted to police corporal.

These promotions will take effect on Oct. 6.
