Cab driver robbed with foot-long knife in Silver Spring -- Gazette.Net

Montgomery County Police are looking for a woman who they say robbed a cab driver with a 12-inch knife on Friday.

Police are investigating whether other cab drivers have suffered similar incidents, said Montgomery County Police Capt. Paul Starks.

ďThat will be something detectives will look into not just in Silver Spring, but in the broader county, and checking with other jurisdictions,Ē he said.

Police were called to the area of Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road at around 6:36 p.m. after receiving a report of a robbery, police said in a statement.

When they arrived in the area, they encountered a Barwood cab driver who informed them that moments earlier, he had been robbed by a passenger.

At around 6:20 p.m. the driver was approached by a woman between 20 and 30 years old in front of the Baja Fresh restaurant located at 8515 Fenton Street in Silver Spring.

The woman got into his vehicle and asked to be driven to a Starbucks near the intersection of East West Highway and Colesville Road. On the way, she said she needed money and asked to be taken to the nearby Capital One Bank at 8676 Georgia Avenue, police said.

Once they arrived at the bank, the woman brandished a foot-long knife and demanded the manís money and credit cards, which he turned over, police said.

She then allegedly forced the man to go to the automated teller machine and after demanding the driverís pass code, attempted to withdraw some money. The driver cancelled the transaction, police said.

ďThe suspect then entered a lower dollar amount and the cab driver again pressed cancel,Ē county police said in a statement. ďThe suspect then entered a third (even lower) amount and the driver did not press cancel.Ē

With a mixture of the manís business and personal money in hand, the woman fled on foot to in the direction of the nearby Silver Spring Metro at 8400 Colesville Road.
