A man is critically injured following an alleged exchange of gunfire between he and several Prince George’s police officers in the Glassmanor area near Washington, D.C. Tuesday.

Around 10:07 p.m., county officers responded to the 800 block of Southern Avenue for the report of a man firing a weapon, county police said.

Upon arrival, officers found the man wielding a gun and told him to drop his weapon. He refused and began to fire at the officers, said Officer First Class Edward Martin, a county police spokesman.

“An exchange of gunfire between the suspect and the officers ensued,” said Martin.

The suspect, whose identity is not being released, was struck and a weapon was recovered from the scene. Emergency responders transported the suspect to an area hospital for critical injuries.

No officers were injured throughout the incident, Martin said.

Martin said while the suspect is still hospitalized, charges will likely be forthcoming when he is released.

Because the shooting took place on the D.C. side of Southern Avenue, the Metropolitan Police Department is handling further investigation.
