An 86-year-old Bowie woman is dead after she was struck by her own vehicle as it backed up over her in the parking lot of a Bowie church Sunday.
Around 11:28 a.m., Bowie police officers arrived at St. Edward’s Catholic Church at 1940 Mitchellville Road for the report of a pedestrian struck when they discovered Marie Surowicz, 86, of the 3800 block of Enfield Chase Ct. in Bowie, lying on the asphalt without a pulse. She was transported to Bowie Health Center when she was pronounced dead.
Surowicz attempted to park her Kia minivan when she got out of the van without putting it into park and it began to drift backwards, according to Bowie police. The side door of the vehicle, which was open at the time, struck Surowicz as it was drifting and she fell to the ground and was run over by the van.
“It’s just a very tragic and unfortunate accident,” said Bowie Police Chief John Nesky.
Angela Cipolla, a receptionist at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, said Surowicz attended the church for eight years.
“It was a very tragic accident. She was a faithful parishioner and came to mass every Sunday,” she said. “All the parish mourns her death and we send our sympathies to the family. It just shook the entire congregation Sunday morning.”
Cipolla said the church is waiting on the request of the family to determine possible memorial services for Surowicz.
Correction: Due to incorrect information from police, the original version of this story incorrectly spelled Marie Surowicz‘s name.
