Of the 11 Prince George’s County teams to start the season 2-0, seven — Forestville, Crossland, Roosevelt, Bladensburg, Suitland, Wise and Flowers — also started 2-0 last year.

Three others last began 2-0 the year before: Friendly, Douglass and DeMatha.

Surrattsville went 2-0 in 2007, but the real breakthrough team is Northwestern.

The Wildcats, who beat Wheaton, 30-0, and DuVal, 28-10, haven’t started 2-0 since at least 2003.

Tough yardage: As rain fell and Bishop McNamara nursed a 7-0 lead against Georgetown Prep on Saturday, running back Adam Gillis Jr. broke runs of 14 and 12 yards to seal the win.

Those carries, his second- and third-longest of the day, gave Gillis 104 yards on 22 carries against an extremely hard-hitting defense.

“He’s one of the most physical football players I’ve ever coached,” Bishop McNamara coach Bryce Bevill said.

Through three games, Gillis has 73 of Bishop McNamara’s 89 carries and 363 yards, and that exhausting load won’t change.

“We’re going to keep feeding him,” Bevill said. “Hopefully he’ll get through.”

Best bets

North

No. 7 Eleanor Roosevelt at No. 2 Wise

When: 2 p.m. Saturday

What to know: This is the first meeting this year between any of the 4A South’s big four. Last year, Roosevelt won on a last-second field goal, 23-22, to snap a five-game losing streak to Wise. Like then, both teams enter the game 2-0. Roosevelt quarterback James Warren has run for 215 yards in wins against Norview (Va.) and Bowie. Wise running back Chase Powell has rushed for 195 yards in wins against Franklin and High Point. Both teams are ranked in a statewide media poll — Wise seventh and Roosevelt 18th.

Bladensburg at No. 4 Flowers

When: 2 p.m. Saturday

What to know: In another battle of 2-0 teams, Flowers is the clear favorite. The Jaguars have beaten Largo and Parkdale by a combined score of 87-6, and Bladensburg holds a combined 50-6 advantage in wins against Carver-Vo Tech and Laurel. Flowers has played and beaten Bladensburg on the field every year since 2005 (including a 2007 win that later was forfeited). But Flowers needed a last-second Hail Mary pass to top Bladensburg last season, 25-20. Bladensburg had the ball with seconds left, but turned it over on downs, giving Flowers one last shot.

South

No. 5 Douglass at No. 10 Gwynn Park

When: 2 p.m. Saturday

What to know: After losing to Friendly, Gwynn Park can re-establish itself quickly in the County 3A/2A/1A League title race with a win against Douglass. But that’s no easy task for Gwynn Park, which lost to Douglass, 14-6, last year. Douglass receiver Paul Harris, who’s committed to Tennessee, likely will return after missing last week’s win over Largo with an ankle injury.

No. 6 Friendly at Potomac

When: 2 p.m. Saturday

What to know: At 2-0 with wins against Thomas Johnson and Gwynn Park, Friendly is the surprise team in the 3A/2A/1A. But Potomac, which fell to Gwynn Park and beat Ballou, could jump back into the conversation with a win. Look for Potomac quarterback Antonio Washington to throw often against a secondary that includes talented athletes Thomas Corbett, Daniel Cary and Alameen Murphy. Friendly has scored just 28 points this season, so perhaps the Patriots will continue to rely on the spread offensive line formation that produced the game-winning drive against Gwynn Park.
