Prince George’s County police have arrested a Capitol Heights man for the slaying of a 22-year-old Washington, D.C., woman whose body was found floating in a Fort Washington creek Aug. 1.

Joseph Jones, 31, of the 6900 block of Mountain Lake Place was arrested Friday after county homicide detectives identified him as a suspect, according to county police.

On Aug. 1, a Fort Washington resident discovered a suspicious object floating in a small creek in the Tantallon residential community in the 12200 block of Braemer Circle and notified authorities, police said. County police responded and found a bag containing decomposed human remains, which was later identified as Phillips, and the death was ruled a homicide, county police said.

The discovery of Phillips came two days after she was reported missing July 30 from her home in the 5100 block of Fitch Street.

A phone number for Phillips’ residence could not be located.

Jones is charged with first- and second-degree murder and is awaiting an Oct. 5 preliminary hearing in Prince George’s County’s District Court, according to online county district court records.

Attorney information for Jones was not listed with the courts Monday.
