Montgomery County Police misidentified the victim who died Friday as a result of an Aug. 29 crash in Damascus.

In a statement released Friday police misidentified the victim who is deceased as the driver of the car, Billie Jo Wilson, 36, of Mount Airy, but it was Wilson’s husband, James Wilson, 53, a passenger in the car who died Thursday night, according to a statement released late Saturday.

Police are investigating the accident that occurred at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 29. A preliminary investigation revealed that Wilson, driving a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, attempted to pass an off-duty Montgomery County police officer at what appeared to be a high rate of speed, and hit the fender of the officer’s vehicle.

The Grand Am then proceeded across the southbound lane of traffic, struck the fence of a residence in the 28000 block of Ridge Road, and then hit a commercial building next to the residence. The car came to rest on its roof, according to police.

James Wilson, of the 400 block of Beck Drive in Mount Airy, was taken to Baltimore Shock Trauma, and died at 10 p.m. on Thursday.

The off-duty officer was not injured.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed this fatal collision and have not talked to police to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301-840-2435. Callers may remain anonymous.
