The South Bowie Community Center is inviting area children to a party and they don’t even have to dress up.

The community center is hosting two dance parties geared for children — one a Kiddie Cabaret and the other a Back-to-School Pajama Jam.

Both events are scheduled for Sept. 15 at the center, 1717 Pittsfield Lane. They offer area children a chance to go out and dance, eat and party, said center director Nancy Pfeffer.

The cabaret is designed for young children between the ages of 8 and 12 years old and will be held from 1:30 to 5 p.m.

Once that event wraps up, older children between the ages of 10 and 17 are invited to attend a pajama jam. That event will feature dancing, games, food such as pizza and other health snacks. The night will also feature a competitive pajama contest, which will break attendees into age groups and have all of them vote by applause as to who has the best evening wear, said Carolyn Walters, assistant director of the center.

Those who win their bracket will be able to win prizes such as free meals at area restaurants or used books, Walters said.

“It has to be in good taste,” she said. ”We’re looking for everything from sports theme to cute.”

For both events, Bowie residents must pay $5 to attend, while nonresidents are asked to pay $6.
