Takoma Park’s search for a new police chief has come to an end.

Alan M. Goldberg — a retired, 30-year veteran of the Montgomery County Police Department — was tapped Sept. 5 as the new Takoma Park Police chief. His first day on the job is Oct. 1.

“I am honored to be selected as the Chief of Police for Takoma Park,” Goldberg said in a media release. “I am excited about continuing and furthering relationships with the residents and businesses of the City through a transparent partnership with all facets of the community and the police department in order to keep Takoma Park and safe and livable City.”

Goldberg was selected in a nationwide search from a pool of about 75 candidates. Goldberg retired in November 2011 as a duty commander for the field services bureau. During his time with the county, he served as commander of the 6th District station, director of the records division and deputy commander of the 3rd District station.

He has also served as partner and vice president for The Critical Incident Review Group, an expert consultation service formed last year that focuses on incident management, review of use of force, less lethal force, training and tactics.

Former City Manager Barbara Matthews noted Goldberg’s commitment to community-oriented policing and cross-jurisdictional collaboration as reasons for the selection in the release.

“I think Alan will be a great addition to the staff and I think will kind of build upon the very solid foundation that was left by Chief [Ronald] Ricucci,” Matthews said Sept. 6.
