At times the Friendly High School football team's play wasn't pretty, but in a battle of two teams nicknamed Patriots Friendly made plays at the right time as it pulled off a 20-13 victory against Gov. Thomas Johnson on Friday night in Fort Washington.
“I think it just came down to the fact that we wanted to win,” Friendly coach Peter Quaweay said. “I think our kids wanted to win bad. I think what we learned is our kids can battle through adversity. A lot of things happened that didn't go our way, but they showed me that when they get down they just have that will.”
The play of the game came midway through the fourth quarter. With his team holding a tenuous 14-13 lead, Friendly's Ravon Davis managed just a 12-yard punt that gave Thomas Johnson the ball at midfield.
Thomas Johnson drove to the Friendly 31-yard line and faced a third down and one. Star senior tailback Richy Anderson (77 yards rushing, 63 yards receiving) took a handoff and appeared to cross the first down marker, but he fumbled the ball and Friendly recovered.
Friendly linebacker Isaiah Harris triggered the turnover.
“I pushed the offensive tackle into [Anderson] and the tackle accidentally kicked the ball out of his hands,” Harris said.
Friendly scored on the game's opening drive with quarterback Thomas Corbett II (84 yards passing, 57 yards rushing) capping the drive with a 1-yard run.
Thomas Johnson struck back when quarterback Heath Dahlgren (171 yards passing) connected with receiver Dallas Bowens on a 10-yard touchdown pass, and the extra point gave Thomas Johnson a 7-6 lead.
Friendly went ahead for good late in the third quarter when Davis took a pitch back 75 yards down the Thomas Johnson sideline for a touchdown.
Anderson scored on a 25-yard run with 9 minutes, 39 seconds remaining in the game to pull his team to within a point at 14-13. But following Anderson's fumble later in the fourth quarter, Friendly drove 66 yards and killed nearly 6 minutes before an 8-yard touchdown run by Khaylen Rouse gave Friendly a 20-13 lead with just 42.8 seconds remaining.
The win avenged a season-opening loss to Thomas Johnson in 2011 and got Friendly off to a good start. Last year, Friendly was shut out in each of its first four games before winning five of its last six to finish at 5-5.
