About 750 new teachers are preparing this week for the first day in a Montgomery County Public School.
But 50 open positions need to be filled by the time school starts Monday, said Larry A. Bowers, chief operating officer for Montgomery County Public Schools.
The school system has 11,556 teachers for about 147,000 students.
MCPS will contract out the work if staff is not able to fill the positions by then, Bowers said. He gave the update to the school board on Thursday.
Some of the positions are in elementary levels, some in special education, and others are part-time positions such as foreign language teachers, Bowers said.
The school system hired more staff this summer than in the past four to five years, he said.
Prince Georgeís County School Board Chair Verjeana Jacobs told WTOP this week that the school system started the school year this year with 109 teacher vacancies; the county has 9,000 teachers and 125,000 students.
