Mary Lee Matthews and her family recently received the 2011 Community Eagle Award at Frederick Community College’s Donor Scholar Reception.

Matthews received the award at a reception in May, and was honored for her dedication and service to the college for more than five decades.

She has contributed time, expertise and funding to campus beautification projects and to the Carl and Norma Miller Children’s Center. Her deceased husband, Chris T. Matthews was the chair of the college’s first board of trustees, from 1975 to 1978, and her son, Paul, is a current board member for the FCC Foundation, Inc.

The FCC board room has been named the Chris T. Matthews Board Room. He was a member of the Frederick County Board of Education for 20 years, and helped lead the college’s effort to have its own governing board in 1975. The college was founded under the umbrella of the Frederick County Public School system in 1957. He died July 17, 2009.

In 2008, the Matthews and their sons Paul, Chris and Scott established the Chris and Mary Lee Matthews Family Foundation Scholarship Program endowment to ensure scholarships for FCC students in the future.
