Four juniors qualify for Ryder Cup-style tournament
Four Montgomery County junior golfers have made it through local qualifying to earn spots on the Maryland Capital Cup team where they will square off with Virginia’s best juniors in a two-day Ryder Cup-style match.
Mike Blasey (Potomac), Evan Shapiro (Rockville), Carter Connelly (North Bethesda), and Jon Carr (Rockville) took four of the 12 spots on the Maryland team, which is undefeated in the four years of Capital Cup competition.
Play begins on Saturday at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond with a morning alternate shot round and is followed by a best-ball style round in the afternoon. Sunday’s morning round is the final and decisive 18 holes of the contest.
Those who earned spots received two team shirts, a hat, a dozen balls, four free rounds, and complimentary housing and meals.
Gaithersburg runners compete in North American finals
On Aug. 4, two Gaithersburg youths competed on the track against a field of athletes from all over the continent.
Baebaa Sayeh and Jamila Thomas, representing Gaithersburg Sports Track and Field, made the trip to Hershey, Pa., to compete in the 50 meters. Sayeh took fourth in the boys 9-10 division and Thomas finished sixth in the girls 9-10 age group.
The duo qualified for the meet after winning their divisions at a state championship meet on June 23. Their times were then compared with the top times in the region and were quick enough to send them to Hershey.
Northwest duo qualifies for World Maccabiah Junior Golf team
Northwest High School’s Joey and Zach Burkinshaw both survived 54 holes of qualifying at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., to qualify for the 19th World Maccabiah Junior Golf team. Joey, 17, made the team while Zach, 15, is currently an alternate. The team is scheduled to compete in Israel next summer.
Peace finds the silver lining in summer track meet
Albert Einstein High School’s Winona Peace competed in the Keystone Games track and field meet in New Cumberland, Md., on Aug. 4 and earned four medals.
She took silver in the 100 meters, long jump and triple jump and a bronze in the 200 meters.
