A Clarksburg teenager raised more than $1,500 this month during her sweet 16 birthday party for a local charity.

Priyanka Patel, who turned 16 on July 24, hosted a birthday party Aug. 4 in Gaithersburg, in which more than 100 guests were asked to give money to Manna Food Center, the food bank in Montgomery County.

The incoming Poolesville High School senior raised $1,633 during the party at Flower Hill Community Center.

According to the centerís 2011 annual report, in fiscal 2011 the nonprofitís income was more than $1.6 million, of which $323,384 came from individuals. With those and other funds the center was able to serve 184,215 people in the county last fiscal year and distribute 3.6 million pounds of food to those families.

Patelís donation will help the center to provide about 1,050 pounds of food to those in need of it.
