After winning the Maryland American Legion state tournament last weekend at Frederick’s McCurdy Field, Sandy Spring Post 68 unexpectedly is not participating in this weekend’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament in West Lawn, Pa.
The reason for the team not traveling to Pennsylvania is not known at this time, but centerfielder and four-year veteran Ian Velez said there was perhaps a miscommunication on the part of the coaches and tournament committee regarding the minimum number of players required to participate in the event.
“It’s disappointing we can’t go to regionals, but at least we won states,” Velez said. “We were really looking forward to comparing our team with the best competition in the region.”
Post 68 was scheduled to play in the tournament place now through Tuesday, and if they advanced out of the Mid-Atlantic Region, would have continued to the national tournament in North Carolina.
Sandy Spring coaches could not be reached for comment.
