John Douglas Watkins, 87, of Morgantown, W.Va, formerly of Gaithersburg, died July 30, 2012, at home.
Born Nov. 3, 1924, in Washington, D.C., he was preceded in death in February by Marie S. Watkins, his wife of 65 years.
He owned photography studios in Gaithersburg and Huntsville, Ark., a craft store and photo refinishing business in Oakland and worked for The Gazette as a photographer from the early 1950s to mid-1970s. Additionally, he worked for the National Security Agency and the National Bureau of Standards.
He is survived by his children, Linda Marden of Morgantown, W.Va., Bonnie Swyter of Oakland, Mark Watkins of Oakland and Steve Watkins of Oakland; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. August 25 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Oakland.
